Material-Specific Instructions – Archaeological Collections
Handling of the materials
Always handle materials while wearing protective gloves. You will receive gloves from staff, and they must be used according to the staff's instructions.
Handle materials carefully and keep them in their original order. Always handle materials on the tabletop – do not place them on the edge of the table or stack them. Staff will assist with handling large or otherwise problematic materials and will provide material-specific handling instructions when necessary (e.g., materials containing asbestos).
Taking samples from objects without the Finnish Heritage Agency’s permission is strictly prohibited.
Before you begin
- Roll up sleeves and remove wristbands, lanyards, and long necklaces.
- Wear protective gloves – ensure the size fits properly.
- Plan your sequence if there are many objects. You do not need to remove all objects from their boxes at once.
- Remember that food and drinks are not allowed in research spaces.
Working
- Do not rush.
- Do not place objects on top of one another or near the table’s edge.
- Do not lift large objects, coffins, or textiles alone – our staff will always assist with this.
- Arrange the tools so that you do not need to lift objects over them.
- Ensure that research equipment (e.g., loupe, magnifying glass, etc.) does not touch the object’s surface. Ask staff for assistance if needed.
- Do not touch tools, your phone, skin, or face with the same gloves you use for handling objects. For example, if you answer the phone, remove your gloves first and put on a new pair when you resume work.
- If you notice a significant change in an object during handling (e.g., a tear or material detaching from the object), contact staff immediately.
- If a tray or object falls, or anything else unexpected happens, contact staff immediately.
Afterwards
- Return objects to their boxes/trolley in the same order as when they were brought to you.
- Remove gloves by grasping at the wrist opening and pulling them off, turning them inside out as you remove them.
If you need help or advice on handling or studying the materials, you can always ask the staff.
